Tamang Gendered Subjectivities in a Migrating World

This paper explores the continuities and transformations wrought in Tamang systems of sex and gender by the recent extensive wage outmigration, mostly of men. That is, it is about what is happening to the material prospects for Tamang men and women, as well as in Tamang constructions of gendered value. Although both men and women are experiencing dramatic experiential changes, the greater challenges to self-worth are confronting women, whether they are left behind in the villages, migrate halfway to live in Kathmandu, or travel themselves to work and live internationally. 'Kirtan's Downfall': The Sadhaka Kirtaniya, Cultural Nationalism and Gender in Early Twentieth-century Bengal

This article studies the relationship between the discourse of Bengali cultural nationalism and the devotional song genre of padavali kirtan in the early twentieth century. Prominent in the work of padavali kirtan enthusiasts amongst the Bengali elite—the bhadralok—was the promotion of the image of a religiously devout and musically skilled musician, referred to as the sadhaka kirtaniya. The advancement of the sadhaka kirtaniya as a cultural template was based on non-cosmopolitan, male performers of the genre who began to perform and teach in Kolkata at the turn of the twentieth century....

African women are demanding for political inclusion not because they are merely women but because they have capacity and qualify for such recognition

Historical accounts have evidence that Women have proven their Mettle when saddled with the responsibility of leading a society. From Biblical accounts of women like Queen Sheba, Esther et al, down to the Cleopatra, Queen Victoria, Queen Amina of Zauzau and the Longest British serving monarch; Queen Elizabeth II, these women were given rare chance to succeed on the throne antecedently held by men. Most of them inherited a society in turmoil and were able to restore sovereignty and order to the land. These women succeeded not because of they were merely women but because they were given this...
