Ao abrigo do programa ‘Tropical Field Research’, da Van Hall Larenstein Applied University of Sciences (VHL University - Holanda), 14 estudantes da licenciatura de Tropical Forestry’ estiveram na Reserva da Faia Brava, de dia 1 a 8 de Maio de 2014. Os estudantes participaram num estudo de monitorização da vegetação em colaboração com o Instituto Técnico de Lisboa, com a investigadora Vânia Proença, e nos últimos dias, desenvolveram, em grupos, diferentes temas de investigação.
Este foi o segundo ano em que os alunos da licenciatura de "Florestas tropicais" estiveram presentes na Reserva da Faia Brava, mesmo não tendo esta um clima tropical, foi ideal para potenciar o sentido crítico e a capacidade de investigação dos estudantes, e proporcionar-lhes uma experiência diferente, em cultura, língua e biodiversidade. For the course ‘Tropical Field Research’ of Van Hall Larenstein Applied University of Sciences (VHL University) fourteen students from the Netherlands have been in the Faia Brava Reserve to execute research in terms of their major ‘Tropical forestry’. This fieldwork training helps them to prepare for independent field research in the tropics. Even though Faia Brava does of course not have a tropical climate, the students learn to set up and execute their research independently and live in conditions where there are language barriers and differences in flora, fauna and climate, compared to their home country.
For ten days the students have been spending their days in the field. The students conducted a soil classification exercise and oak regeneration monitoring in collaboration Vânia Proença, a postdoc researcher from Lisbon at IN+, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research. The students spent their last days in the reserve in small groups, executing their own field researches. After returning to the Netherlands, the students will analyse their collected data and share the results and conclusions in poster presentations to ATN. 
The group lived in a community building in Algodres. Students Sake Alkema and Solveigh Koekkoek explain about their experience “the days were generally spent with long hikes through the reserve and enjoying the beauty of the Vale de Côa. Coming from the (relatively) cold and wet Netherlands, it didn’t take long for everyone to get sunburned. The starting and ending point of our days, was the bar Escondidinho in Algodres. This was a heaven for the not-so-awake and weary students throughout our trip. As our group was split up in different teams, unique experiences were shared at dinner. Everyone is enthusiastic about the flora and fauna in the Faia Brava reserve, we really enjoyed our stay and will surely recommend all our friends and family to plan a trip to this amazing area”.
