Discontinuous intersections: second-generation immigrant girls in transition from school to work

This article provides a theoretical framework for analysing discrimination against second-generation immigrant girls in education and the labour market by proposing an intersectional approach. Drawing upon selected elements of the findings of our Neskak Gora Project - a qualitative research conducted between 2009 and 2011 in Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK and funded by the EC Daphne III Programme - we show that the intersection of class, gender and 'race'/ethnicity, which is at play at the structural, institutional and discursive levels of systems of...

Standardization and Subjection: An Autonomist Critique of Neoliberal School Reform

Drawing on autonomist Marxist political theory, this article argues that the neoliberal standardization of schooling encloses student subjectivities. The standardization of schooling hinges not only on strict discipline and high-stakes accountability, but also on the individuation of the capacity to live and learn collectively. In this sense, educational standardization produces schools that are sites of institutionalized subjection, enclosing the possible subject positions students can inhabit and hindering collective struggles for autonomy. Rethinking educational struggle from an...

Education Reform Initiatives in the Caribbean Basin

We chronicle the systematic factors that account for patterns of regional outcomes in education by identifying the different historical stages and external factors that have driven educational investments across the region. Attention is also given to the appropriation of external delivery transfer mechanisms (such as policy borrowing and lending) that serves different needs...

Navigating (un)popular music in the classroom: Censure and censorship in an inclusive, democratic music education .

Popular music has often been promoted as an accessible, readily intelligible, engaging, authentic medium for young music students. Including a variety of popular musics in school lessons has also been regarded as a more relevant approach to teaching young people, establishing a continuum between school activities, and their musical worlds beyond classroom walls. In this way, these musics have been seen as particularly democratic, in the sense that they offer all students equal opportunities to participate in a hands-on approach to music-making in the classroom. However, a number of...
