Chapter 11 Epilogue: The Iberian Way into the Anthropocene Helge Wendt Why Combine the Anthropocene and Iberian Colonial History

The debates in the historiographies dealing with knowledge and science in the Iberian world from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries are well known. They dominate most publications that seek to evaluate the status of cultural, colonial and epistemic differences. This volume offers a collection of heterogenous case studies that respond to this tradition. In this Epilogue, I aim to develop an idea that in a way summarizes the results of the contributions. I propose the rather innovative approach of combining research in the history of the Anthropocene with the history of globalization...

On Why We Need Art - The Aesthetics of Self-Becoming

If aesthetics is to re-establish its philosophical importance a change is needed. Instead of engaging with art mainly through the crude notion of expressive qualities, or making it speak through the voice of 'authorities', we need a Copernican turn. This means a re-orientation of aesthetics towards i) those experiential needs which give rise to art, ii) the way they are articulated through artistic creation, and iii) a clarification of the unique effects consequent upon this creation. In the present discussion I offer an approach to all these issues. My starting...

What Drawing and Painting Really Mean - A Phenomenology of the Image

The bulk of this document is the Introduction to a book of the same title that will be published by Routledge in its Advances in Art and Visual Studies series. The book's main theme is as follows. There are as many meanings to drawing and painting as there are cultural contexts for them to exist in. But this is not the end of the story. Drawings and paintings are made, and in their making embody unique meanings that transform our perception of space-time and sense of finitude. (These are even found in drawings and paintings done by computers) Such intrinsic...

"Mapping Wonder in the Māui Moʻolelo on the Moʻoāina: Growing Aloha ʻĀina Through Indigenous and Settler Affinity Activism." Rooted in Wonder: Tales of Indigenous Activism and Community Organizing. Eds. Aiko Yamashiro and Bryan Kuwada A special issue of Marvels & Tales 30:1 (2016): 45-69.

As wondrous lands are represented as "wastelands" to make way for urban and industrial development in Hawaiʻi, kūpuna or elders and cultural practitioners are currently building a movement across the islands to mobilize moʻolelo (stories and histories) in huakaʻi aloha ʻāina, (physical and spiritual travels to view and remember celebrated and sacred places) in order to protect them. On these huakaʻi, moʻolelo have critical decolonial effects as they articulate an ʻŌiwi moʻoʻāina economy of abundance that restore "wastelands" to ʻāina kamahaʻo (wondrous land) and ʻāina momona (abundant...

Cultural Lens of Genomi_Final2016.docx

Trauma healing through a cultural lens investigates the Survivors Female Tacit Knowledge & Sustainability outcomes. Genomic methods widen the scope for understanding gene/culture as being a co-evolving process. Current research results indicate human genes are changing due to new and not resembling something known previous environments which impart cultural socially learned information (biosemiotics) through oral memory traditions, a science of rituals. A span of sixteen years in working with the trauma survivors from Novi Travnik, Bosnia treating trauma from a forensic...
